Rock en español es la música rock compuesta e interpretada en castellano. A diferencia del rock en inglés, el rock en español ha logrado tener éxito mundial en pocas ocasiones, y muchas veces ni siquiera entre países de habla hispana. Por eso el rock en castellano se ha desarrollado de manera heterogénea en las distintas naciones hispanohablantes; quedando así la música de muchas bandas para uso casi exclusivamente nacional hasta la llegada de la globalización de contenidos multimedia acentuada por la generalización de internet y desarrollada especialmente en el siglo XXI.
The Mars Volta fue un grupo de rock estadounidense de El Paso, Texas, fundado por Cedric Bixler Zavala y Omar A. Rodriguez-Lopez. Generalmente se les clasifica dentro del rock progresivo experimental. Son conocidos por sus conciertos en vivo, salvajes y enérgicos, altamente improvisados y la presencia de letras crípticas.
Nacida de las cenizas de la banda de post-hardcore At The Drive-In y del grupo de Dub Instrumental llamado De Facto , los integrantes iniciales de The Mars Volta fueron Omar Rodríguez-López (Guitarra), Cedric Bixler-Zavala (voz), Jeremy Ward (teclados y ambientes), Juan Alderete (bajista), Jon Theodore (batería) e Ikey Owens (teclados). Clasificarlos dentro de un género o estilo musical resulta tan difícil, que incluso ellos mismos no se preocupan por hacerlo, TMV (The Mars Volta) se transforman así en pioneros de una nueva estructura musical.
