El J-Rock se mantuvo en un perfil bastante bajo, en especial debido al boom de la música dance y electrónica que emergieron en esta década, y algunos artistas que lograron destacar de este estilo en la época son Gackt y Malice Mizer. El J-Rock volvería a retomar fuerzas más tarde a finales de los 90s y principios del nuevo milenio cuando bandas de Rock/Pop como Bz, Mr. Children y Bump of Chicken vuelven a atraer al público principalmente de la nueva generación, que ya comenzaba a aburrise del Pop sintético.
Posiblemente sea una de las bandas más emblemáticas del siglo XX, X Japan inspiró a toda una nueva generación de músicos japoneses. Inspiraron a muchos músicos del emergente movimiento Visual (X Japan es anterior al estilo Visual-Kei, Hide dio el nombre de Visual Kei al género que aparecería más tarde.) en la música japonesa gracias a su uso único del maquillaje, pelucas imposibles y ropas extrañas. Su estilo es Speed Metal, una variante del Heavy metal; género caracterizado por líneas de batería rápidas y variables, líneas de guitarra con un fuerte componente progresivo, y grandes influencias de música clásica. Mezclan música orquestal altamente épica con la rapidez y agresividad del metal. Muchas de sus canciones son preciosas baladas con gran presencia del piano, mientras que la otra mitad es Heavy metal (en diferentes vertientes). Finalmente el Speed Metal evolucionó en 3 tipos diferentes de metal, de los cuales se puede decir que el Power Metal es el que coincide con X Japan.
Yoshiki es el líder, batería, pianista y principal compositor del grupo. Un artista de una sensibilidad excepcional, que imprime la magia y sentimientos a las canciones, esa magia que hace de X Japan un grupo tan especial. Cuando acabaron de grabar en 1996 su último álbum, Dahlia, Yoshiki hizo que los demás componentes del grupo y el resto del personal le dejaran solo en el estudio para oírlo completo. Desde la tercera canción, Longing ~togireta melody, no dejó de llorar hasta el final del disco.
