Del latín gothicus, gótico es un adjetivo que hace referencia a aquello perteneciente o relativo a los godos. Este era un pueblo que se encontraba tras la frontera oriental del Imperio Romano y que formaba parte del grupo que los romanos denominaban como bárbaros. Este vocablo fue acuñado por el tratadista de Florencia, Vasari, quien en una biografía sobre pintores toscanos incluyó un apartado sobre el arte de la Edad Media.
The Sister Of Mercy es una de las bandas más reconocidas y que destaca muy por encima de la segunda oleada de rock gótico. El grupo tomó el nombre de una canción del cantautor Leonard Cohen; se formaron en Leeds, Inglaterra, en 1980 de la mano de Andrew Eldritch (voz, nacido como Andrew Taylor) y Gary Marx (guitarra, nacido como Mark Pairman) con la ayuda de una caja de ritmos, la mítica Doktor Avalanche. Originalmente se usó una DR-55, después fue remplazada por una Roland TR-606 y durante la grabación del primer álbum se usó un TR-808.
Grabaron un single en su propio sello Merciful Release con el título “The Damage Done”, según sus propias palabras “para oírse en la radio”. Tras ese momento, la banda decidió ampliar su nómina con Craig Adams (bajo) y Ben Gunn (guitarra) para telonear a The Clash y Psychedelic Furs. Se ganaron una buena reputación y editaron otro par de singles así como diversas sesiones de radio en la BBC que les permitían seguir girando por las islas.
