El hip hop es un género musical que incluye golpes rítmicos que acompañan a una voz principal que rapea. Este es un género musical muy popular y uno de los principales componentes de lo que es considerado como la cultura hip hop. Muchos espectáculos instrumentales en los que se presentan DJs sin apoyo vocal, también son abarcados bajo el género de la música hip hop. Esto se ha vuelto más popular dado que las técnicas de mezclado y sampleo (o muestreo) han madurado en los últimos años.
El verdadero nombre de Kid Rock es Robert James Ritchie y nació en el pequeño pueblo de Romeo, Michigan, el 17 de enero de 1971, creció escuchando los principios del hip-hop como the Fat Boys y Run DMC, así como iconos de Detroit como Bob Seger y los MC5.para 1990 estaba grabando su primer álbum "Grits Sandwiches For Breakfast", despues acompañó a gente como Ice Cube y Geto Boys en un tour nacional. En 1993, Rock se asoció con Continuum Records y grabó su segundo esfuerzo llamado "The Polyfuze Method", tiempo despues sacó un EP titulado "Fire it Up", que incluía la primera versión de "I am The Bullgod", pero por problemas con la disquera, Kid Rock se retiró de Continuum. Después de algunos años de tours, Rock finalmente grabó su tercer álbum, "Early Mornin´Stoned Pimp" en los estudios White Room, en Detroit, el cuál `se lanzó en 1996, ahora bajo su propio sello discográfico, Top Dog Records, el disco expandió los temas e ideas de "Polyfuze". En 1998, Rock lanzó su más dinámico, fuerte y mas comercialmente accesible álbum hasta la fecha, el multiplatino, "Devil Without A Cause", con tracks pesados como, "Bawitdaba" y "Fist of Rage", temas funky como "I Gotta One 4 Ya" y "Wastin´Time", pero la sopresa del álbum fue la balada country "Only God Knows Why", la cual daría paso a un éxito country que grabaría a dueto con Sheryl Crow para su siguiente álbum, Cocky.
