El término screamo se aplicó en primer lugar a un conjunto de bandas que se presentaban desde 1991 en el Ché Café, y que componían un estilo hardcore influenciado por la escena emotional hardcore, particularmente de bandas como Fugazi y Nation of Ulysses. Este conjunto agrupaba a bandas como Heroin, Antioch Arrow, Mohinder, Angel Hair, Swing Kids, y Portraits of Past; y destacó por su peculiar sentido de la moda, inspirado en la cultura mod.
Underoath fue una banda de Metalcore, formada en Tampa, Florida, E.E.U.U caracterizada porque todos sus miembros son cristianos. Actualmente su discográfica es Tooth & Nail Records/Solid State Records. Su estilo musical ha cambiado constantemente debido a los cambios en su formación.
Underoath se formó en 1998 en Florida, con sólo tres integrantes, los que eran Dallas Taylor como vocalista, el guitarrista Lucas Morton, y el baterista Scott Nunn. Un tiempo después el bajista Octavio Fernández y el guitarrista Corey Steger fueron agregados a la banda . Aaron Gillespie también substituyó a Scott Nunn en la batería. El talento de la banda llamo la atención Takehold Records, y rápidamente firmaron contrato. Era entonces que Lucas Morton decidido dejar la banda. En 1999, la banda lanzó su primer disco titulado Act of Depression. El álbum contaba con seis canciones .
